Error: ScanDisk cannot examine drive <letter>:...(due to incorrect version).
Error:
ScanDisk cannot examine drive <letter>: This version of Microsoft ScanDisk will work only with MS-DOS versions 5.0 and later
Cause:
An earlier version of ScanDisk is being run with Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2, instead of the version included on the Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 CD-ROM.
Solution:
Extract SCANDSKW.EXE, DSKMAINT.DLL, and SCANDISK.EXE from the Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 CD-ROM.
NOTE: The Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) CD-ROM is required to perform the following procedure:
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Programs' and select 'MS-DOS Prompt'. (The 'MS-DOS Prompt' window appears.)
3) Rename SCANDSKW.EXE, by typing the following at the DOS prompt and pressing ENTER:
REN SCANDSKW.EXE SCANDSKW.BAK
4) Rename DSKMAINT.DLL, by typing the following at the DOS prompt and pressing ENTER:
REN SYSTEM\DSKMAINT.DLL DSKMAINT.BAK
5) Rename SCANDISK.EXE, by typing the following at the DOS prompt and pressing ENTER:
REN COMMAND\SCANDISK.EXE SCANDISK.BAK
6) Insert the Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 CD-ROM into the appropriate CD-ROM drive.
7) Extract SCANDSKW.EXE, by typing the following at the DOS prompt and pressing ENTER:
EXTRACT <drive1>:\OSR2\SETUP\WIN95_14.CAB SCANDSKW.EXE /L <drive2>:\WINDOWS
(where <drive1> is the letter of the CD-ROM or floppy drive being used and <drive2> is the letter of the drive the file is going to be extracted to).
8) Extract DSKMAINT.DLL, by typing the following at the DOS prompt and pressing ENTER:
EXTRACT <drive>:\OSR2\SETUP\PRECOPY2.CAB DSKMAINT.DLL /L <drive2>:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
(where <drive> is the letter of the CD-ROM or floppy drive being used).
9) Copy the current version of SCANDISK.EXE to the hard drive, by typing the following at the DOS prompt and pressing ENTER:
COPY <drive1>:\OSR2\SETUP\SCANDISK.EXE <drive2>:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
(where <drive> is the letter of the CD-ROM or floppy drive being used).
10) Exit the DOS prompt, by typing the following at the DOS prompt and pressing ENTER:
EXIT
11) Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
